What is Instagram Engagement Rate?
Instagram engagement rate measures how actively your audience interacts with your content relative to your audience size. It combines likes, comments, saves, and shares into a single percentage, giving you a quick read on how compelling your posts are. A higher engagement rate signals that your followers find your content worth interacting with, which can help posts reach more people.
On Instagram, engagement rate is usually calculated against your follower count, though some creators prefer to measure it against reach (the number of unique accounts that actually saw the post). Both approaches are valid — what matters most is using the same method consistently so you can track changes over time.
How to Calculate Instagram Engagement Rate
The most common formula is: ((Likes + Comments + Saves + Shares) / Followers) x 100
For example, if you have 10,000 followers and a post earns 300 likes, 40 comments, 50 saves, and 10 shares, your engagement rate would be: ((300 + 40 + 50 + 10) / 10,000) x 100 = 4.0% — a great rate for Instagram.
If you prefer the by-reach variant, simply swap your follower count for the post's reach: ((Likes + Comments + Saves + Shares) / Reach) x 100. This tends to give a more accurate picture for an individual post, especially when reach differs significantly from your follower count.
What's a Good Instagram Engagement Rate?
As general guidance, Instagram engagement rates typically average around 1-3%. Rates in the 3-6% range are great, and anything above 6% is excellent. Keep in mind that engagement varies widely by niche, audience size, and post format — smaller, highly focused accounts often see higher rates than large ones.
Instagram engagement tends to run lower than TikTok, where rates of 3-6% or more are more common. That's largely because TikTok's algorithm surfaces content to non-followers more aggressively. If you also post short-form video, you can compare the two with our TikTok engagement rate calculator.
